Henryk Altman doesn’t see himself as a Good Jew.
From his St. Louis den in 1986, Henryk reveals his extraordinary adventures surviving the Holocaust: how he navigated the Warsaw ghetto, escaped Treblinka death-camps twice, joined the Resistance, blew up trains, and played cat-and-mouse with the SS throughout WWII.
Fearing Henryk's stories would die with him, his son, Murray Scott Changar, and his partner, performer Frank Blocker, created this touching solo play—verbatim from their interviews with Henryk. Directed by Jamibeth Margolis, herself a granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, GOOD JEW offers hope, humor, and a much-needed historical perspective while it keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. But Henryk doesn’t see himself as good: no one survives war by being good.
Check out the Good Jew website for additional information or get the story behind the play from author/performer Frank Blocker
Our Peculiar Works projects are made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, and from New York City Council member Christopher Marte; and with private funds from the Mental Insight Foundation, as well as our many, wonderful, individual donors.
